The only trouble with this is that I can't sketch worth a damn, so I would like to modify my offer to a piece of artwork. I will be as flexible as I can.

I hadn't posted a personal quote anywhere really, until today. A friend who lives several hundred miles away called me this morning, and said something so sage and profound, I sat down while she was still talking, and added it to my profile.

Disclaimer : This is a sad journal entry. It is about someone else's personal tragedy, so if you don't want to cry a little, you may not want to read on.

I am going to use initials because ultimately, this isn't *my* story, and I don't want to violate their privacy here.

My friend (A) was telling me the end of a long, horrible story. Her best friend (M)for eighteen years has been fighting cancer for almost three years. The fight is over. Her friend was forty-one years old, and left a husband (M), and two children (ages seven and nine).

Such a sad story, but my friend amazes me. She inspires me, and renews my faith in people, friendship, and human devotion. She held her friend's hand throughout her illness, hugged those children, and gave her friend's husband a shoulder to cry on. She helped hold that terrified, devestated family together throughout their fight against cancer.

Her friend let go yesterday morning, and after the first tears of loss dried, she and her friend's family went to get food, and remember happier times. At the restaraunt there was an awkward moment when a stranger remarked to one of the children about his "Mommy and Daddy." In the moment following the innocent, but inappropriate remark, my friend put her hand on "M's" arm, and stopped him from saying something about the situation. She told him, "If you say something, this pain and awkwardness will drag on, and everyone here will feel awful again. Look at your family. They are remembering her, smiling, and having a nice time. If you let it go, it will be over quickly." Then she told him possibly the wisest thing I've ever heard, "Sometimes you just have to smile, and let the moment pass."

Her strength and wisdom impress me so much. I am proud to call her my friend, and I hope with all my heart that she, and her friend's family find comfort in each other, and "M's" memory.
