Literature Text

Happiness disintegrates, left untended.
Youth passes unnoticed
as we become ourselves.
Beauty sinks into
wrinkles of time,
but sorrow floats.

Laughter bounces over pain,
briefly, lightly, counterfeit.
Makeup, jewels, candlelight
disguise the
cruelty of time,
but sorrow floats.

Misery suffocates a smile.
Forsaken love lingers too long.
Innocence is crushed beneath
the weight of a broken heart.
Dreams are stifled by reality,
but sorrow floats.

The title was shamelessly lifted from a line in John Irving's "The Hotel New Hampshire."
